5 Features the Best Motorcycle Vests Share (& 4 Vests That Have Them)

The best motorcycle vests are abrasion-resistant, include/are compatible with CE-rated impact protection, feature secure storage pockets, and may even offer climate control. Adjustable elements can also help to fit the vest either over or under your road jacket. Ultimately the right vest will depend on where, when and how you ride, and your personal preferences in terms of features and style.

The best motorcycle vest for:

Vests and bikes go together like peas and carrots. Keeping your core warm and your arms free, motorcycle vests offer riders both comfort and control.

Modern motorcycle vests are also far more than a canvas to display your patches on. They can save your spine, make you more visible in low light conditions, and even actively heat or cool your torso.

At Bikebiz, we've spent over 25 years testing the world's best motorcycle gear in Sydney's unique conditions, from hot and humid summer downpours to frozen, drizzly mid-winter mornings. In the process we've separated the gimmicks from the gamechangers.

In this guide, we break down the features that the best motorcycle riding vests share, and four of the very best vest options based on your riding style.

5 essential features every good vest should have

How do you separate the best vests from the rest? At Bikebiz, we're home to Australia's biggest range of road gear from the world's best brands (such as AGV, Alpinestars, Cardo, Dririder, Merlin and more), and we've tested pretty much every item we sell, so we know the difference-making features that you should be looking out for.

A few key elements that quality motorcycle vests from top brands tend to share include:

  • Abrasion resistance: Wrapping around your vital organs, a good vest acts as a protective shell. Cowhide leather motorcycle vests remain the gold standard for abrasion resistance, but modern high-denier textiles provide solid protection too – a synthetic vest just shouldn't be worn after a slide, while a leather biker vest often can be.
  • Armour compatibility: While abrasion resistance keeps the skin on, impact protection keeps the spine safe. The most protective vests feature a pocket for back armour, where you can slide in a CE-Level 1 or 2 back plate. If the armour is made from a material like D3O, it will feel perfectly soft while you ride but harden instantly on impact.
  • Adjustability & fitment: Vests are often worn over shirts, jumpers, jackets and hoodies, so adjustable features like side-lacing, velcro expansion gussets and stretch panels help to ensure the vest always fits snug and doesn't flap at highway speeds.
  • Secure, weatherproof storage: A good vest provides a safe haven for your phone, wallet and any other valuables you might be carrying. Look for deep internal pockets with zips or fasteners that won't fly open in the wind.
  • Climate tech integration: While not a must-have, modern vests can feature active cooling and/or heating to make riding far more comfortable in extreme temperatures.

The top 4 vests for every riding occasion

Choosing the right vest is about matching the tool with the task. From carving through chicanes to navigating the Nullarbor, here are a few hand-selected choices from our range, categorised by riding style.

Occasion 1: The traditional cruiser & club rider

You ride a heavy V-twin, prefer fashion that is more subtle and relaxed, and want the peace of mind that comes with heavy-duty protection.

Our recommendation: Argon Riot Vest

At first glance – plus a second and third glance – the Argon Riot Vest looks like standard streetwear: a comfortable fleece hoodie wrapped in a tough denim vest. But look closer and you'll find X-Halo CE Level 2 shoulder and elbow protectors, a Kevlar® lining, and heavy-duty construction designed to stay strong while enduring huge forces.

Occasion 2: The tech-focused sport & street commuter

You navigate busy city streets or take the aggressive line on weekend track days, and want MotoGP-level torso protection without the bulk of a heavy track suit.

Our recommendation: Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 System

It might look simple, but the Tech-Air 5 System is perhaps the most advanced piece of wearable gear in our showroom. An autonomous airbag vest, its sensors detect crashes and deploy protection in milliseconds, wrapping your shoulders, ribs and spine up in potentially life-saving cushioning. It also fits under all types of riding jackets, allowing you to maintain a street-ready look during your daily commute.

Occasion 3: The outback adventurer

You're tackling dirt and dust in the Australian summer, where heat exhaustion is a genuine threat and even the most breathable jacket can start to feel like an oven.

Our recommendation: Alpinestars Cooling Vest

No bulky, battery-powered fans that you forget to charge or ice packs that you forget to freeze; just fill the reservoir on this vest with tap water at the start of your ride. It cools you through evaporation, using ventilated mesh panels to maximise airflow, and ensures you stay focused on the trail ahead, not the blazing sun above.

Occasion 4: The mid-winter tourer

You push through bitter mornings and the brutal wind chill of winter highway rides, so you want to keep your core warm in order to stay comfortable and sharp.

Our recommendation: Macna Black Hot Vest

Usually, warmth means thickness: wrapping yourself in the equivalent of a torso mattress to keep the chill out and the heat in. Not with the Macna Black Hot Vest. Wafer-thin, it features heating elements powered by a dedicated battery, and can easily fit beneath whatever road jacket you choose to wear. With three different heat levels and up to three hours of warmth, it transforms bone-chilling burns into comfortable cruises.

Sizing your vest: over or under?

The golden rule of vest sizing: decide how you'll wear the gear before you buy. In order to choose the right size you need to account for the layers you'll place beneath or over the vest.

If you're eyeing off a club style leather vest or a hi-vis motorcycle over-vest to wear on top of an armoured leather jacket, you probably want to choose the size above your go-to. On the flipside, a heated motorcycle gear battery vest or a Tech-Air compatible vest will sit beneath your primary jacket, so it's safer to stick with your standard size.

Motorcycle vest FAQs

Does a leather motorcycle vest actually provide protection?

Yes, provided it's a purpose-built cowhide leather motorcycle vest and not a thin leather fashion vest. A high-quality leather vest is a piece of abrasion-resistant riding gear that can keep the skin on your torso, but for maximum safety choose a garment that also includes a motorcycle back armour pocket to house a CE-rated back protector insert.

Can I wash a heated or cooling motorcycle vest?

Washing technique depends on the tech. An evaporative cooling motorcycle vest can generally be hand-washed with mild soap, but an electronically heated vest is more delicate: remove the battery first and carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid damaging the internal wiring.

Do I need to buy a specific brand of jacket to use the Alpinestars Tech-Air vest?

No, you don't. The Tech-Air 5 system can be worn under any brand of motorcycle jacket. The only requirement is that the jacket has around 4cm of extra room around the circumference of the chest so the airbag can deploy safely.

Invest in vest: upgrade your torso protection with Bikebiz

Don't let a lack of gear limit your riding season or compromise your safety. Warding off heatstroke, battling the winter chill, wrapping yourself up in A1 protection; the best motorcycle vests can do it all, and can look good while doing it. The best motorcycle vests are a truly versatile investment, offering levels of comfort and protection that other forms of road gear struggle to match.
