Stop Compromising: Choose The Best Motorcycle Pants for Your Riding Style

You've invested in a slick jacket, a quality lid. You feel like you're pretty much ready to ride, and the thought of finishing off the outfit with a pair of Levi's is pretty tempting: they're comfy, they look good, and jeans are famously tough… right?

Sure, they're tough compared to chinos, slacks or cotton work pants – they're just not motorcycle tough. Standard fashion denim puts your pins at the mercy of the tarmac, the dirt and any other obstacles that might lay in the path of your slide.

Abrasion resistant motorcycle pants are a non-negotiable. The best offer all the protection and comfort your riding style demands: strength and street style for urban commuters, kneepads and aerodynamics for track fiends, all-weather comfort for tourers.

At Bikebiz, Sydney's #1 motorcycle dealer, we've spent the last 25 years testing motorcycle pants in Sydney conditions. In this guide we break down the best options, from summer mesh motorcycle pants, to all-weather tourers to reinforced racers that'll save you in a high-speed slide.

Why regular denim will cost you

First things first: what's so bad about denim? Short answer: a lot.

Your favourite pair of jeans might feel hardy, but ultimately they're made from cotton, which isn't particularly abrasion resistant. They'll last less than a second sliding on asphalt: the seams will give out, the fabric will wear through, and looser fits might hook on an obstacle and make a bad situation even worse.

Think of motorcycle pants as cheap skin insurance. By integrating advanced materials (Kevlar, Cordura) and impact armour (D3O, CE Level 1 and 2 inserts), purpose-built bike trousers protect your skin from road rash, your soft tissues from tears, and your bones from fractures.

Standard denim is a risk that just isn't worth taking. Investing in proper gear ensures a garden variety spill won't automatically send you to the hospital.

The next question: which are the best motorcycle pants?

The urban commuter: kevlar & protective riding jeans

If you ride to work, or use your bike to run your errands around town, you'll want pants that don't look out of place in the office, shops or pub. You'll want riding jeans.

While leathers are more protective, they fall down a little in terms of fashion and off-bike comfort, giving off a rigid Power Ranger vibe. In riding jeans, single-layer denim interwoven with tough Aramid fibres like Kevlar and Cordura offers great levels of tear and abrasion resistance, while also feeling surprisingly lightweight, flexible and soft to the touch.

Removable CE-rated knee armour and hip inserts are also key, giving you extra protection on the road, then letting you pull the pads out and enjoy a more natural fit once you arrive at your destination.

Our recommendation: RST Tech Pro Jeans

A consistent best-seller at Bikebiz, RST Tech Pro Jeans are for riders who don't want to compromise on safety or comfort. With reinforcements in all the right places, they have a AAA safety rating – the highest CE rating possible – while looking like streetwear.

The all-weather tourer: textile & waterproof pants

If you're an adventure rider, long-distance tourer or year-round commuter, you want gear that lets you totally ignore the weather forecast. When the mercury drops or a deluge starts, touring pants come into their own.

Look for high-denier nylon (400D to 1000D+) or Aramid-lined pants that provide all the abrasion-resistance you need, but that also form a solid barrier against the elements, wicking off moisture when the rain starts to fall.

Speaking of, the best all-weather pants feature waterproof drop-liners that keep you dry, alongside removable thermal layers for those nippy winter mornings. Large zip vents are also key for those Sydney summer rains and humid afternoons.

Our recommendation: Alpinestars Andes v3 Drystar Pants

A global best-seller, Andes v3 Drystar pants offer 100% waterproofing along with massive vents for summertime breathability. Pre-contoured legs are designed for long-distance touring comfort.

The weekend carver: leather riding pants

For sportbike enthusiasts, you don't want a Sydney Motorsport Park track day or national park twisties to come with potential road rash.

While modern textiles are impressive, leather is still the undisputed king of riding protection. Whether from a cow, a goat or a kangaroo, leather represents the gold standard in abrasion resistance, and has an unmatched ability to slide over rough surfaces at high speeds.

When shopping for leathers, look for bent legs and accordion stretch panels that help you find comfort in a tight tuck. If you lean deep into corners, choose replaceable knee sliders, and make sure the armour sits exactly where you need it when you're in the saddle.

Our recommendation: Alpinestars Missile V3 Leather Pants

The name says it all: the Missile V3s make you feel like a projectile, slicing through the air as you barrel down straights. Your pins are wrapped in premium bovine leather that looks good and feels even better, with advanced flex-fit mapping allowing you to fold into an aggressive riding posture.

Beating the heat: summer & mesh pants

When the mercury hits 35C+ in Sydney, particularly when humidity is high, riding can go from joyful to brutal. The temptation is to strip back to shorts, but trading safety for comfort is a bargain that no rider should ever make.

Mesh-panel textile pants are the answer. They are designed for maximum airflow, while keeping your legs covered and impact zones like knees and hips fully protected. You stay cool during the Sydney summer, safe in the knowledge that your slacks will survive a slide.

Our recommendation: Dririder Air-Ride Pro Pants

Air-Ride Pros are the go-to pants for riders who want to negate the heat. A durable 600D polyester shell and CE Level 2 armour offers healthy abrasion resistance, while high-flow mesh panels channel air to where you need it.

The female rider: women's riding pants & leggings

For a long time women were forced to wear bike gear designed for men, resulting in dangerously bad fits. But an explosion of female riders means that there's now a wealth of gear made for the unique size, shape and proportions of the female figure.

Riding leggings and tailored jeans use high-stretch, high-strength fabrics that move with your body. You look good, you feel good, and you enjoy all the protection you need.

Our recommendation: Alpinestars Banshee Women's Leggings

The comfort of yoga pants, combined with the strength and safety of motorcycle gear. It's quite the sales pitch, but with a figure-hugging stretch-fabric design, Banshee Leggings manage to tick both boxes, thanks mainly to the full Aramid fibre lining that provides abrasion resistance in its most unobtrusive form.

FAQs: best motorcycle pants

Can I just wear heavy-duty workwear or tradie pants on my motorcycle?

In a word: no. Tradie gear isn't designed to handle the heat and friction of a high-speed slide, and they offer zero impact protection for your knees or hips. Purpose-built riding pants are the only way to ensure you don't get peeled like a potato.

Are motorcycle jeans as safe as leather pants?

Modern riding jeans are super tough – much of the Bikebiz range has the highest possible AAA safety rating – but leather is still the undisputed king of abrasion resistance, which is why we recommend it for high speed outings like track days. If you're commuting to work, even at highway speeds, most modern riding jeans will offer more than enough protection.

Should I size up when buying motorcycle pants?

Not necessarily, but you do need to account for your riding position. A pair of pants that feels perfect while standing might feel too short or tight once you're in the saddle, so we recommend jumping on a bike to find your perfect size, or failing that, doing a quick squat test. If you plan on wearing base layers, a slightly roomier fit might be worth your while.

Do all motorcycle pants come with armour?

Most quality riding pants will come with CE-rated knee armour as standard. Hip protection is sometimes an add-on, so you should always check the product description to see exactly what's included. At Bikebiz we recommend upgrading to CE Level 2 armour for the highest level of protection.

Protect your pins in comfort and style

Often the first point of contact with the road, your legs can bear the brunt of a crash. Wrapping them in the right material is therefore critical.

At Bikebiz we don't think you should have to compromise on protection, comfort or style. From stealthy riding jeans to chicane-ready leathers, our comprehensive yet carefully curated range of motorcycle road pants has something for everyone.
