Which Honda supersport motorcycle is best for me?
You don’t have to be at the track to feel that supersport edge - Honda’s CBR500R makes every ride a thrill, loaded with dynamic handling, plenty of power and a killer look...all in a LAMS package. The responsive 471cc twin cylinder EFI engine drives hard out of turns and sings on the straights. 41mm preload adjustable front forks put you in touch with what’s happening at the road and ABS brakes boost safety. Aggressive, aero styling is everywhere. The icing on the cake is practicality, reliability, comfort and economy that make sense in everyday riding.
Honda’s next bike in the LAMS supersport lineup has more capacity, but all the usability - say hello to the CBR650R, but don’t be surprised if that big inline 4 engine simply snarls back. Full fairing, full-on aggressive styling, this is a bike that’s thrilling just to look at and simply awesome to ride. The engine is a 649cc, liquid cooled, fuel injected powerhouse, with DOHC and PGM-F1 injection. Handling? How about Honda’s own Selectable Torque Control System (HSTC) and Showa Separate Function Forks up front. Y-spoke aluminium wheels are stunning, the LCD dash oozes high tech quality and the styling of the whole bike has been borrowed from Honda’s RC213V racer. Slim. Sharp. Versatile. That’s the CBR650R.
It’s always out there. On every supersport grid on every track, a favourite with club level racers and international stars alike. What’s amazing is that it’s also one of the world’s all-time favourite road bikes - the mighty Honda CBR600RR.
Continuing the Honda theme of ‘total control’, the latest CBR600RR borrows features from the RC213V racer and incorporates them into a bike that’s compact, featherweight, aerodynamic and eager, with more power than ever delivered in a way that always puts the rider in charge. The lightweight twin tube frame is created from hollow castings for the perfect balance of rigidity and handling flex. The 599cc DOHC liquid cooled inline 4 engine with PGM-F1 is super compact, with revised ports, bigger throttle bodies and enhanced valve timing. There’s Throttle By Wire, Honda Selectable Torque Control, 6-axis Inertial Measurement, quickshifter and 5 riding modes. A slipper clutch controls rear wheel hop and Supersport ABS means safe braking right to the edge. Front end feel is incredible thanks to inverted BPF forks with Honda Multi-Action System refinement. There’s a HESD steering damper, TFT instruments and an aero design lifted straight from the HRC playbook. The supersport class has taken a quantum leap forward with the new CBR600RR.
The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP is the top - Honda building open-class superbikes at its very best. This side of borrowing Marc Marquez’s race ride, you’ll struggle to find anything more thrilling. It’s a genuine racetrack refugee that has earned the right to wear the mark of HRC.
Honda Fireblades have always been known for enormous power made usable, and the advanced inline 4 now pumps 160kw at a howling 14,500rpm. Throttle by Wire, naturally. There’s also Selectable Torque Control, quickshifter, Smart Key and a Six-Axis Intertial Measurement Unit (IMU) helping the bike optimise power delivery and braking for every situation.
The suspension specs would have had any superbike race paddock drooling just a few short years ago. Ohlins NPX front fork, Ohlins Object Based Tuning Interface (OBTi) and a HESD electronic steering damper with 3 levels. A longer swingarm aids traction. Brembo brakes stop like nothing else on earth. There are aero winglets, a full colour TFT display with dozens of selections and a razor sharp look with unmistakable HRC pedigree. The Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP. It really is the best of the best.
